South Africa women national team Bayana Bayana shock defending champions Nigeria 1-0 in their first match in the Ghana 2018 AWCON tournament.






The Super Falcons started their campaign at the 11th edition of the AWCON with star players Desire Oparanozie, Asisat Oshoala and Rita Chikwelu.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria battled hard in their first game but lost to the Bayana Bayana of South Africa.

The Super Falcons could not begin their campaign on a winning note  (CAF)

The first half ended goalless as there were not much clear cut chances for either side before the break.

Reigning African Women's Player of the Year Oshoala was the star attraction as she collected a yellow card and played Oparanozie through on goal only to blaze over the bar.

The second half did not provide much excitement either as there were few chances for both sides which proved to be a difficult encounter for both sides.

Nigeria could not capitalize on the chances created against South Africa  (CAF)
The only goal of the match was scored in the 85th minute through Thembi Kgatlana with a superb volley from the right which completely beat the Nigerian goalkeeper.

The Super Falcons had their moments in the match as Asisat Oshoala made a beautiful run down the right but Desire Oparanozie could not finish the resulting pass.

The result means that Nigeria began their title defence with a loss as Zambia take on Equatorial Guinea in the next encounter.
